Spring Cleaning after a Divorce: Having a Fresh Start after a Finalized Divorce

Spring-time brings that feeling of happiness and new beginnings.  A traditional start to that new beginning is spring cleaning! Spring cleaning gives people a fresh new feeling to tackle the impending seasons ahead and start anew.  Whether you are cleaning out your house—or cleaning up your life after a divorce—allow those spring showers to wash away your feelings of sadness, regret, or self-doubt.  A divorce is a fresh start! Embrace that new beginning.

  1. Give yourself time to grieve: Divorce is a significant loss.  Allow yourself time to process your emotions and grieve the end of your marriage.
  2. Focus on self-care: Make sure you remember to take care of yourself emotionally, physically, and mentally. Some examples of this would be exercising, eating healthier, getting more sleep, or seeking support from friends, family or a therapist.
  3. Set new goals: Use this as an opportunity to set new goals for yourself.  This could be anything from starting a new hobby or career, or even pursuing a personal or professional goal.
  4. Create a new routine: A divorce often involves significant changes to your daily routine. Consider creating a new routine that includes activities or hobbies that bring you joy and fulfillment.
  5. Let go of resentment and anger: Holding onto resentment and anger toward your ex-spouse can prevent you from moving on and finding a fresh start.  Consider seeking counseling or therapy to help you work through those emotions.
  6. Embrace your newfound independence: Use this time as an opportunity to embrace your independence and explore new experiences or opportunities that you may not have considered before.

Remember, a fresh start is a process.  Just like cleaning out those old boxes in the garage, it takes time.  Use this time to embrace new opportunities.  Be patient with yourself and take things one day at a time.  Breath that fresh spring air!
