Trick-or-Treat safety!

Article

Safety isn’t just for the workplace! Did you know that, in 2015, a pedestrian was killed by a car every two hours and 78 percent of those fatalities occurred while crossing the road?  We don’t want to scare you, but, tonight, safety is a must!

On “Beggar’s Night,” it’s easy to get swept away in all of the excitement, but Bricker & Eckler wants to remind you how to keep you and your loved ones safe at home, too. Make sure you and your kids are protected by following these tips:

COSTUMES should be made of non-flammable materials. If your children’s costumes are longer, pin them up  to give your child more freedom to move. Instead of a Halloween face mask, convince your child to use face makeup – wearing a mask could obstruct his or her vision and might impair his or her ability to walk around safely. And, try to convince them to walk instead of run to avoid nasty falls.

TRAFFIC is always a concern on Halloween night. If possible, incorporate reflective elements into your child’s costume. Don’t let your overly excited trick-or-treater run ahead where he or she could dart out into traffic; a driver may not see your child or may be unable to stop fast enough to avoid a tragedy.

BOOS! Parents, we know Halloween isn’t all about the kids but do limit your “Boos” to make sure you are keeping an eye out for your child’s safety, as well as the safety of other children. Please keep the streets safe for our little ghosts and goblins by not driving if you have had anything to drink.

STRANGER DANGER Never let your child trick-or-treat alone. If your children go out with a group of friends, make sure they know where they are going and stay in familiar neighborhoods.  And, remind your child to never enter someone’s home or accept a ride without first obtaining your approval.

TREATS!! Once your children return from trick-or-treating, make sure you examine their haul before they start eating. Look for any unwrapped, unlabeled or homemade treats and throw them away.

Keep these safety tips in mind to make sure your child has a truly happy Halloween this year.
