Strange bedfellows? Insurance and political protests clash in the era of COVID

When Canadian truckers blocked key trade routes to the U.S. over government-mandated health orders, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Parliament invoked the Emergency Economic Measurers Order, Canada’s first national public order emergency in half a century, to break up the blockade. One component of the government’s actions included a restriction on financial services to the truckers, including suspension of property & casualty insurance, as Timothy Darragh reports in A.M. While most insurance policies have exclusions for damage that occurs while committing an illegal act, it is rare that a government proactively requests carriers to suspend coverage because a policy holder is engaged in illegal activity.
