Lawsuits filed over the largest CRT stockpile in U.S. history

Two Columbus warehouse owners have filed federal lawsuits against over 40 electronics scrap companies, saying they are to blame for the largest cathode ray tube (CRT) glass stockpile in U.S. history. The Plaintiff-owners claim that over 316 million pounds of CRT waste materials were shipped to and have been left in warehouse facilities in Arizona and Ohio operated by Closed Loop Refining and Recovery, which closed down in 2016. These stockpiles are alleged to violate the federal Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA). In total, the three Ohio sites are estimated to hold 158 million pounds of e-scrap, and the Plaintiff-owners argue the sites will require over $18 million in cleanup costs.
