As national convention activity ramps up, delegates, public officials, lobbyists and their staffs from across the country are getting ready to make their way to Philadelphia and/or Cleveland next month. In preparation for the conventions, state and federal agencies have issued communication outlining related rules, regulations and guidelines. Because participation in some convention activities is prohibited, and other activities must be carefully reported, these communications serve as a warning against illegal and unethical behavior.
Anyone planning to participate in a national convention should review the following resources:
U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Ethics’ Memorandum: Advisory memorandum for all members, officers and employees regarding member participation in certain events taking place during a national political convention.
Federal Election Commission’s Rules for National Convention Delegates: Answers to frequently asked questions about FEC rules governing delegates to national nominating conventions.
Joint Legislative Ethics Committee’s Memorandum: A review of Ohio lobbying reporting requirements for expenditures made for the benefit of Ohio state level public officials and employees in attendance at national conventions.
