OCOG study reveals upward trend in Court’s support of open government

A recent study by the Ohio Coalition for Open Government (OCOG) reveals that Ohio Supreme Court rulings in favor of open government issues have been trending upwards. In 2015-2016, 13 case decisions supported open government, open meetings and Sunshine Law issues. From 2010-2015, only 12 cases supported government transparency. According to the Hannah Report, OCOG President Dennis Hetzel stated that “the current trend is very encouraging. Three years ago, we were very concerned that the pendulum of Court decisions had swung too far in favor of secrecy.” The study, which can be found on OCOG’s website, also includes an analysis of justice votes, identifying patterns in open government decisions.
