FEC's three-step process for handling questionable contributions

The Federal Elections Commission (FEC) recently issued a reminder to PAC treasurers about handling questionable contributions.  Treasurers were advised of the three-step process for handling checks from suspected corporations, potential foreign nationals or other contributions of questionable legality.

  • Step 1: Deposit (or return) the contribution within 10 days of receipt.
  • Step 2: Seek evidence of its legality by making at least one written or oral request of the contributor within 30 days of receipt.
  • Step 3: If the committee cannot confirm that the contribution is permissible, it must refund the contribution within 30 days.
