In a joint program with the Chicago Bar Association and Art Institute of Chicago, we presented our Continuing Legal Education Program on Brush with the Law...an Artful Eye on Law to a capacity gathering yesterday in Chicago. We looked at four United States Supreme Court decisions in health care, search & seizure, free speech and equal protection through the lens of masterpieces of artwork and the common ground principles of art and law. The Art Institute masterworks included: Renowned Chicago architect Louis Sullivan (the “father of the American skyscraper”) and American and French Impressionism of the late 19th/early 20th century.
The Art Institute is home to Grant Wood's American Gothic. The models for this icon, by the way, were Wood's sister and (no stranger to sharp objects) his dentist.
