Sumitomo Corp.’s battery power storage system in Hamilton County, Ohio (see our June 4, 2015 blog post for more on this), “has commenced operation,” nawindpower.com reports. The Willey Battery Utility LLC “will provide a reliable and stable supply-demand balancing service for the frequency regulation market” operated by PJM Interconnection, the regional transmission organization that coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity in a multi-state region. Nick Hagiwara, director of the power and infrastructure group of Sumitomo Corp. of Americas, said, “[a]s a developer of wind and solar power plants, which are unavoidably intermittent generation sources, we think it is quite important that we also contribute to the stabilization of power grids through balancing services.” Battery energy storage reached its highest levels in 2015, and is expected to continue to grow (see our November 11, 2015 article). Duke Energy also previously announced its own battery storage project in New Richmond, Ohio (see our June 9, 2015 blog post). For more, read the full article.
