Last year, the Archbold Area School District wind turbine generated not just electricity, but also revenue through the sale of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs), the Archbold Buckeye reports. The turbine “generated enough electricity to create 379 RECs” during the last quarter of 2015, according to superintendent Aaron Rex. One REC is equivalent to one megawatt hour (MWh), or 1,000 kilowatts generated for one hour. Rex reported the results to the school board, and said “the district has a contract with Sauder Woodworking, in which the company agrees to buy up to 375 RECs, also known as ‘green tags,’ at a cost of up to $7,500 per year, or $37,5000 over the life of the five-year agreement,” according to the article. Any RECs generated in excess of 375 are sold to a “worldwide broker of green tags.” Money received from selling the RECs “is credited to the account used to pay for maintenance on the wind turbine,” according to Rex.
