Ohio considers commercializing rest stops

As a way to raise millions of dollars to fund road projects, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is considering leasing rest areas to developers, Dayton Business Journal reports. The department is also assessing a number of additional options to help subsidize $30 million to $50 million a year in maintenance costs at those facilities, including selling advertisements at the rest areas along Ohio’s interstates.

Although federal rules prohibit ODOT from commercializing 45 rest stops along interstates, “it might lease 56 rest areas along other highways to developers to build restaurants, gas stations and lodging,” the article said. For more, read the full story.
