As part of the Ohio Department of Transportation’s (ODOT) Division of Innovative Delivery, which was created to help the department evaluate and execute alternative income generation strategies, ODOT has signed a contract with Massachusetts-based Travelers Marketing to sell advertising, sponsorships and naming rights for the 45 rest stops throughout Ohio, the Plain Dealer reports. It is estimated that the deal will earn the state “up to $13 million over the next eight years,” the article said. In addition, three companies are currently vying to land a contract with ODOT that would sell naming rights and sponsorship for interchanges, bridges and “unique stretches of road” — a deal ODOT estimates could earn the state up to $15 million a year, the article said.
