Solar power could be coming to Monroe Local Schools, making it the first district in the area to use the alternative energy source, the Hamilton Journal-News reports. The district’s Board of Education gave unanimous approval for the school system to participate in a state program that will generate $100,000 annually in energy savings, according to the article. The program “funds the updating of school HVAC, lighting and other energy systems,” with “$986,000 in costs borrowed from the state.” The loans will then be paid back over time out of the savings generated from the energy improvements. District officials said “they may consider installing a small field of solar panels along the northern border of its campus off Yankee Road,” which would add to the electricity cost savings. Monroe Superintendent Phil Cagwin said, “We feel this is an opportunity that makes sense on many different levels for our district. The main benefit is that we are able to make capital improvements to the facilities without having to borrow more money from the taxpayers.” For more, read the full article.
