For the third time, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded a grant to Lake Erie Energy Development Corp. (LEEDCo)’s proposed Icebreaker offshore wind turbine project, The Chronicle-Telegram reports. The $3.7-million grant, which brings the federal funding total for the project to $10.7 million, is dependent “on a partnership between LEEDCo and a Norwegian wind developer [see our December 17, 2015 blog post] that provides a $1.9 million cost share,” according to the article. The DOE “made LEEDCo a runner-up when it announced in 2014 that it would be awarding $47 million in grants to offshore projects in the Atlantic Ocean [see our May 16, 2014 blog post].” Because other projects “have fallen behind the government’s engineering development schedule,” LEEDCo hopes the DOE will declare the 20-megawatt Icebreaker project a finalist and transfer a primary grant to it.
