Tax district revenues will fund necessary infrastructure and repayment of bonds for one of the largest developments ever in Butler County, the Journal-News reports. The $350 million mixed-use Liberty Center development sits within a joint economic development district (JEDD) “that shares income tax revenues between Liberty Twp. (83 percent), Mason (15 percent) and Middletown (2 percent),” according to the article. Liberty has already “spent a total of $255,000 on vandal screening for the Liberty Way overpass, adding a sidewalk along Yankee Road, signage and beautification efforts,” according to the article. Mason has completed millions of dollars in road improvements to Mason Road, a Mason Road roundabout and a Bethany Road/Mason-Montgomery roundabout. While Liberty Township receives the greatest share, any JEDD money the township spends “must be used for items that benefit the JEDD district such as infrastructure, beautification and services related to the area,” said Liberty Township Economic Development Director Caroline McKinney. Middletown and Mason are free to spend their JEDD income however they wish; for Middletown, it is the only source of revenue for the city’s property development fund, according to the city’s economic development director, Denise Hamet.
