Feds give $600,000 to Western Reserve Port Authority to test brownfields for contamination

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded the Western Reserve Port Authority a $600,000 grant to test for possible environmental contamination at brownfield properties throughout the Warren area, WFMJ.com reports. The organization is currently working with the Mahoning River Corridor initiative, the Trumbull County Planning Commission, and officials in the city of Warren and in Howland Township to determine which sites will be tested. Clearing properties of possible environmental contamination risks makes the property more attractive to both businesses and lenders, and is generally regarded as the first step in redeveloping a former industrial site, the article said.
