The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced recently its "first-ever national standards for mercury and other toxic air pollution from power plants," according to an article in the National Journal. The Mercury and Air Toxic Standards will force many Ohio utility companies to either perform billions of dollars worth of upgrades or face a possible shutdown, Columbus Business First reports. The newspaper said that Akron-based First Energy Corp (NYSE:FE) expects it will cost $2-3 billion to comply with the new rules while Columbus-based American Electric Power Co. Inc. (NYSE:AEP) and Cincinnati's Duke Energy Ohio will also "be forced to make expensive upgrades." For more information, read the National Journal article here and the Business First article here.
