Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald and Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson have partnered to push forward a $350 million plan to remake Cleveland’s Public Square. The project includes a pedestrian bridge to the lakefront and a hotel to accommodate the city's new convention center, which is set to open this month, The Plain Dealer reports. Project funding will include $93 million in unanticipated revenue from the convention center and attached Global Center for Health Innovation projects, which finished under budget because of "lower construction costs and higher-than-expected sales tax and hotel bed tax revenue." FitzGerald and Jackson said that the new Public Square project will not result in any new or increased taxes. They are working with area business leaders to examine additional revenue sources for the project, including local foundations, corporate sponsors, nonprofit groups and investment funds. The current plan, which could be realized as soon as spring 2016, has a private operator running the hotel, with a public entity owning it, the article said. For more, read the full story.
