The Board of Regents’ Technology Transfer and Commercialization Task Force, which is charged with helping “higher education institutions to increase the number of discoveries and innovations it patents and markets,” recently shared its recommendations during a session at Ohio State University, Gongwer reports. The recommendations were compiled in the Regents’ 2012 Report on the Condition of Higher Education, which “calls on colleges and universities to address Ohio’s position as a top producer of innovations that is at the bottom in commercializing its research,” according to The Hannah Report. Gongwer listed the panel’s primary recommendations as follows:
(1) Remove barriers at Ohio universities and colleges that restrict entrepreneurism and commercialization,
(2) Build statewide and regional "ecosystems" for technology commercialization,
(3) Promote greater collaboration among higher education, industry, government, and communities in the interest of economic development,
(4) Promote changes that reward entrepreneurism at institutions of higher education,
(5) Promote higher education and industry "cooperation" toward industry development and attraction,
(6) Develop capital resources for the Innovation Continuum,
(7) Develop a Workforce Commercialization Continuum with the Governor's Office of Workforce Transformation, and
(8) Create and apply new metrics for higher education's participation in technology commercialization and job creation.
