American Electric Power Ohio (AEP Ohio) and Columbia Gas awarded Athens County $85,602 for energy efficiency improvements after the county exceeded its goal for the Community Energy Savers pilot program, The Athens Messenger reports. The four-month program was meant “to help residents and businesses reduce energy use and costs by increasing awareness of energy conservation and encouraging participation in the utilities’ energy efficiency programs,” according to the article. The award will be used to fund energy efficiency improvements to the county’s public libraries. Sarah Conley-Ballew of UpGrade Athens County “said that Athens County more than doubled its baseline of utility energy program enrollment” to surpass the program’s goal, and that this success “makes the county one step closer to winning the $5 million Georgetown University Energy Prize.” For more, read the full article.
