A proposal to invest $60 million in the Lorain harbor, creating “a world-class intermodal port system,” could bring “a flurry of benefits to the Black River area in supporting industry and linking up with the global supply chain,” The Chronicle reports. John Falbo Jr., vice president of Terminal Ready Mix, said the plan “would link three riverfront properties and upgrade harbor and rail infrastructure” to “create a specialized port facility . . . giving it access to markets across the world,” according to the article. Shoreline improvements would include steel sheet piling to create a retaining wall along the shore. Falbo also noted adding a rail spur could provide access to “a major rail line that runs between the East Coast and Chicago with a lot of activity in Lorain.” He noted “[t]he real opportunity here is in all of the support businesses that are contributory to a port,” including longshoremen, trucking, and cold storage facilities.
